UrbanSpaces is a European project that looks at history between WW1 and WW2. In 8 towns, in 6 countries on a local level, but not without incorporating the the European perspective to promote multicultural understanding and meaningful connections between these local communities. Now in one of its final legs, UrbanSpaces is taking on Brussels. Their workshop, held at the House of European History and the European Committee of the Regions between February 22 and February 26, is truly a highlight of the project.
The aim of the project is to create engaging didactic materials, in the form of an interactive film clip kit and handbook. Materials flexible enough to be used in various formal and informal educational environments across Europe. Whilst educating about the social, economic and political history through this malleable didactic material, it also aims to
highlight how history is not concrete. The past is a series of facts and events. History, however, is the retelling of these events. This is where the complexity of the narrative finds its footing.
But who are the people and institutions behind the name? UrbanSpaces is a mosaic of museums, archives, universities, highschools and historical societies that knows no age limit and no borders. A hybrid of generations, languages, histories and stories, virtual and in person meetings. The Brussles workshop is one of several occasions which brings all of its members together in person: a face-to-face opportunity to expand on what has been done virtually, and in this case, to present the results and to reflect on the work of the project and the participating towns.
